Second Grade News for September 6-9, 2011

Please look for a September Reading Calendar coming home today (9/6).  The required reading is 20-30 minutes each night.  If your child is not reading on grade level, please have him or her read aloud to someone in the family.  (I am sending home a note today about reading level)

Hopefully, this week the laminator will be working and I can start sending home the round trip folder, I will let you know as soon as I do.

We are having a little trouble in line, many children think that being first or last are the place to be, please reinforce that it doesn’t matter where anyone is because we are all going to the same place.  Thank you.

Interventions:
This week will be the first week of intervention reading groups.  Intervention groups are based on the reading need of each child.  Each child will spend 30 minutes in the computer lab working on FastForward a reading phonics program required of all second graders in the district.  Your child will also spend 30 minutes in a reading group working on skills.  Children’s reading needs differ; some children will be working on phonics and phonemic awareness skills, some on fluency and some on comprehension.  If you have any questions about the interventions please contact me.
Rotations:
This week will also be the beginning of Art, Science and Social Studies rotations.  Mrs. Croft will be teaching science, Mrs. Abens will be teaching Social Studies and I will be teaching art.  This will give each child the opportunity to have experience in all three curriculums each week.  We will also have P.E. on Mondays and music on Fridays.

Help needed:
·         Pianist and song leader for music on Friday’s
·         P.E. Helper for Mondays
·         Parent helpers for reading practice
If you are interested in helping, please contact me.   Thank you!
